Tata Sierra’s Grand Return: ICE First, EV to Follow
Tata Motors is gearing up for a nostalgic yet futuristic revival of the Sierra, an iconic SUV that defined Indian automotive history since its 1991 debut as the country’s first indigenously designed and manufactured off-roader. Discontinued in 2003 after gaining a cult following, the Sierra’s comeback was teased in 2020, promising both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) variants. Now, fresh insights reveal the ICE model will hit showrooms by mid-November 2025, with the EV version trailing just weeks behind – both set to launch before the year ends.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Harrier.EV launch in June 2025, Tata Motors executive Vivek Srivatsa assured Auto Today that enthusiasts won’t have to wait long. “Both versions of the Sierra will be out before the end of this calendar year,” he confirmed, fueling excitement among fans eager for this blend of heritage and innovation.
Tata Sierra EV: The Iconic Design Reimagined
Tata has showcased both Sierra variants at major events: the EV at the 2023 Auto Expo and the ICE at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo earlier this year. Recent intensified road trials hint at polished, production-ready models.

The new Sierra pays homage to its predecessor with distinctive styling cues. Y-shaped LED headlamps and taillights frame its bold front and rear, complemented by chunky wheel arches, flush door handles, butch body cladding, and minimal overhangs for a rugged stance. A highlight is the seamless rear glass area, paired with wraparound quarter glass and a floating roof, evoking the original’s signature Alpine window aesthetic. This design philosophy unites both ICE and EV models, bridging eras seamlessly.
Premium Cabin and Advanced Tech
Inside, the Sierra promises a feature-rich haven tailored for modern drivers. A floating 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, flanked by a fully digital instrument cluster. Comforts include multi-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and electrically adjustable, ventilated front seats.

The EV variant elevates luxury with a full-width triple-screen dashboard, diverging from the ICE’s dual-screen setup. Tata may offer dual seating configurations for the EV: a practical five-seater or a plush four-seater lounge aimed at premium buyers. More details will emerge closer to launch, but early indications suggest a sophisticated, customizable interior.
Powertrains Borrowed from Harrier Success
Drawing from the bestselling Harrier – now available in both ICE and EV guises – the Sierra shares powertrain DNA for proven performance. The ICE Sierra employs the Harrier’s 2.0L Stellantis-sourced diesel engine, tuned for 170hp and 350Nm of torque, mounted on the robust ATLAS platform. This potent combo echoes the original Sierra’s turbo-diesel heritage (89hp, 186Nm in its era) but amps up the grunt for contemporary appeal – with a surprise element yet to be unveiled.

Meanwhile, the Sierra EV rides on the Acti.EV+ platform, mirroring the Harrier.EV’s battery options: a 65kWh pack for balanced range or a 75kWh unit for extended journeys. This setup positions the Sierra EV as a versatile, eco-friendly successor, ready to tackle urban and highway drives with zero emissions.
A Legacy Poised for the Future
The Sierra’s return couldn’t be timelier, capitalizing on Tata’s EV momentum post-Harrier.EV and aligning with India’s push toward sustainable mobility. With its retro-futuristic design, loaded tech, and familiar-yet-refined powertrains, the Sierra – in both ICE and EV forms – is set to recapture hearts and redefine compact SUVs. As road tests wrap up, Tata loyalists can look forward to a mid-November ICE debut, followed swiftly by the electrified Sierra EV, promising a thrilling close to 2025.
