BMW India’s Electric Surge: Aiming for 30% EV Sales by 2030

New Delhi, October 14, 2025BMW Group India is accelerating toward a greener future, forecasting that electric vehicles (EVs) will account for 30% of its sales by 2030, up from 21% today. Speaking to PTI, President and CEO Hardeep Singh Brar highlighted new EV models and growing consumer enthusiasm for green luxury as key drivers. With a 246% year-on-year EV sales spike in 2025 and record-breaking overall sales, BMW is doubling down on network expansion and affordability to capture India’s evolving luxury market.

EV Sales Soar, Led by iX1 and i7

From January to September 2025, BMW retailed 2,509 electric BMWs and MINIs, a 246% leap from the previous year. EVs now constitute 21% of total sales, with the iX1 leading as the top-selling electric model, followed by the luxurious i7. Since launching EVs in 2022, BMW has surpassed 5,000 deliveries, cementing its position in India’s premium EV space. Brar noted, “We’re aiming for EVs in every segment we operate in, building on this momentum to hit 30% even before 2030.”

Strategic Expansion and Affordability

To sustain growth, BMW is eyeing Tier 2 and 3 cities to expand its sales network, tapping into rising demand beyond metros. Brar emphasized affordability, stating, “We’re working on financing initiatives to make owning a luxury car as cost-effective as mass premium.” This approach aims to bridge the gap for aspirational buyers, aligning with government mandates pushing for 30% EV penetration by 2030.

Shifting Consumer Mindsets

Brar highlighted a cultural shift among Indian buyers aged 25–45, who are increasingly willing to indulge in luxury. “The mindset that buying luxury is a sin is fading. Younger consumers want to enjoy premium brands,” he said. This trend, coupled with a propensity to spend, is set to propel the luxury car segment, which Brar predicts could hit 1 lakh annual units with 13–14% growth.

Record-Breaking Sales and New MINI Launch

BMW Group India reported its highest-ever Q3 sales in 2025 at 4,204 units, up 21% year-on-year, and 11,978 units for January–September, a 13% rise. The BMW brand sold 11,510 units, MINI added 468, and motorcycles hit 3,976. On October 14, BMW launched the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman All4 at Rs 64.9 lakh (ex-showroom). Powered by a 2.0L petrol engine (300 hp, 400 Nm), this CBU model blends racing heritage with versatility for urban and rugged terrains.

Competitive Edge in India’s Luxury Market

India’s luxury car segment remains a fraction of the 41 lakh passenger vehicles sold annually but is poised for explosive growth. BMW’s focus on EVs, network expansion, and financing aligns with competitors like Mercedes-Benz, which also projects 25% EV sales by 2030. By offering models like the iX1 and i7, BMW is capitalizing on India’s green wave, where EV penetration hit 6% in August 2025, up from 2.4% last year.

With new launches, a robust sales network, and a finger on the pulse of India’s luxury aspirations, BMW is steering toward a dominant electric future.
