Maruti Suzuki e Vitara EV: India’s Awaited Electric SUV Debut

Maruti Suzuki is poised to electrify India’s roads with the launch of its first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e Vitara, scheduled for December 2025. This mid-size electric SUV, already in production and exporting to global markets, represents a pivotal step for the country’s largest carmaker in the passenger EV segment. Unveiled globally in Europe late last year and showcased at the Bharat Mobility Show 2025, the e Vitara is built exclusively at Maruti’s Gujarat facility, positioning India as Suzuki’s global EV export hub.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first unit on August 26, 2025, coinciding with the inauguration of Maruti’s hybrid battery electrode plant. Shipments commenced shortly after, with over 2,900 units dispatched from Pipavav Port to 12 European nations, including the UK, Germany, France, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Iceland, Austria, and Belgium. Future exports will span over 100 markets, including Japan.
Developed on Suzuki’s dedicated Heartect-e (or 40PL) platform in collaboration with Toyota – which will offer a rebadged Urban Cruiser EV – the e Vitara blends affordability, efficiency, and advanced features to compete in the burgeoning EV space.
Striking Design and Aerodynamics
Embodying NEXA’s ‘Crafted Futurism’ philosophy, the e Vitara boasts bold proportions, polyhedral styling, and aerodynamic elements for optimal efficiency. Its sculpted front fascia integrates matrix LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and LED projector headlamps, complemented by 18-inch alloy wheels. Adaptive grille shutters and a thermal management system, tested from -30°C to 60°C, ensure performance across diverse conditions.
Feature-Rich Digital Cabin
The interior welcomes drivers with a modern dual-screen digital cockpit: a 10.1-inch infotainment display supporting wireless connectivity and a 10.25-inch multi-information cluster. Comforts include ventilated front seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a twin-deck floating console, and ambient lighting. Drive modes – Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow – paired with regenerative braking, enable seamless one-pedal driving.
Powertrain and Efficiency
At the heart lies a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) delivering up to 128 kW (172 PS) and 192.5 Nm of torque. Battery choices include a 49 kWh pack for balanced urban use and a 61 kWh option claiming over 500 km range per charge. These configurations promise versatile performance, with quick acceleration suited for city and highway drives.
Top-Tier Safety Standards
Safety is paramount, evidenced by a 4-star Euro NCAP rating: 77% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child safety. The high-tensile steel body (over 50% advanced-grade) houses seven standard airbags, all-disc brakes, an electronic parking brake, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a robust battery protection structure. Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) add proactive features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
Robust EV Support Network
Maruti is building a comprehensive EV ecosystem, including home-charging solutions and plug-and-play DC fast-charging at Nexa dealerships. Over 1,500 EV-enabled service outlets across 1,000 cities will ensure accessibility. The ‘e for me’ app simplifies ownership, allowing users to locate chargers, schedule sessions, and handle payments effortlessly.

Expected to start at around Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom), the e Vitara will retail through Nexa showrooms and rival the Tata Curvv.ev, Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and Mahindra BE 6 in the mid-size electric SUV arena. With its global pedigree, competitive range, and Maruti’s vast network, the e Vitara is set to accelerate EV adoption in India.
