In One Year, VinFast Transforms from Newcomer to Major Player in India’s EV Market
VinFast, the ambitious Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer, has achieved a remarkable turnaround in India within just one year. From a virtually unknown brand at its debut on January 17, 2025, with the right-hand drive VF 6 and VF 7 compact electric SUVs, VinFast has roared into prominence—building a state-of-the-art factory, expanding dealerships, securing partnerships, earning awards, and ranking among the top 10 EV brands by the end of 2025.
The journey began with careful site selection: surveying 15 locations across six states before choosing Tamil Nadu for its manufacturing-ready infrastructure and green mobility support. Groundbreaking occurred in late February 2024, and in an astonishing 15 months, the 400-acre integrated factory near Thoothukudi was inaugurated on August 4, 2025. This highly automated facility includes a body shop, paint shop, general assembly, logistics warehouse, and supplier zones—producing made-in-India VF 6 and VF 7 tailored for local customers.
CEO Pham Sanh Chau reflected on the rapid progress: “We entered India with nothing. No land. No factory. No team. The only thing we had was a deep resolve and a belief that this area could become a leading hub for electric vehicles and auto components in South Asia… In just fifteen months, we transformed this land into a modern, highly automated factory.” He added that the first locally built vehicles symbolize “the aspirations and resilience of the Indian people as they reach for a better, cleaner future.”
Dealerships, Services, and Ecosystem Building
By the end of 2025, VinFast had established 35 dealerships in key cities, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi, and Hyderabad. Aftersales support comes through partnerships with RoadGrid, myTVS (for charging, maintenance, and diagnostics), and Global Assure (helpline, roadside assistance, and mobile service).
Financing is streamlined via tie-ups with HDFC Bank, Yes Bank, Axis Bank, and others, offering dealer inventory funding and 100% on-road customer loans with dedicated bank officers in showrooms.
The factory is projected to create 3,000-3,500 direct jobs and thousands more in the supply chain, with suppliers relocating nearby.
Awards and Market Recognition
VinFast’s momentum earned prestigious honors:
- VF 7 named “Most Awaited New Car” by ABP Live in April 2025.
- VinFast as “EV Manufacturer of the Year” and VF 7 as “EV Disruptor of the Year” at the Jagran Hi-Tech Awards.
Jagran’s auto editor Arjit Garg praised: “VinFast embodies the spirit of innovation and progress driving India’s EV transformation… The company has displayed a rare clarity of direction for a newcomer and a ‘people-first vision’ that aligns with India’s long-term mobility goals.”
Future Expansion: Buses, Scooters, and Charging
On December 4, 2025, VinFast signed an MOU with the Government of Tamil Nadu to expand the Thoothukudi facility by 200 hectares. This will add production for electric buses, e-scooters, and charging infrastructure, deepening localization and ecosystem integration.
Why VinFast’s Rise Stands Out
In a market led by Tata, Mahindra, and MG, VinFast’s one-year achievements—a factory from the ground up, nationwide dealerships, partnerships, awards, and a top-10 ranking—demonstrate exceptional execution. Starting as an unfamiliar name after journalist visits to its Vietnam plant (300,000 annual capacity, including scooters/buses), the brand quickly gained visibility and trust.
Analysts note potential for further growth with competitive pricing, range, and service—especially as the expanded plant ramps up diverse offerings.
The Bigger Picture: VinFast’s Contribution to India’s EV Goals
VinFast’s swift progress supports India’s clean mobility push, creating jobs, boosting local manufacturing, and offering premium yet accessible electrics. From “whisper” to “roar” in 12 months, the company proves international players with bold vision and speed can thrive in India’s dynamic EV space.
As 2026 unfolds with new models and capacity, VinFast is poised to deepen its roar—driving India toward a greener automotive future.
